Stargazer, U.S.S. Federation starship, Constellation
class, registry number NCC-2893. The Stargazer was
under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard from
2333-2355 on a historic mission of deep-space
exploration, prior to his assignment to the
Enterprise-D. Lieutenant Jean-Luc Picard was a bridge
officer on the Stargazer when its captain was killed.
Picard took command of the bridge and was later
offered command of the ship for his actions.
("Tapestry" [TNG]). During an exploratory mission to
Sector 21503, the Stargazer was attacked by
Cardassian forces and barely escaped. ("The Wounded"
[TNG]). During Picard's command, the Stargazer
visited planet Chalna in 2354. ("Allegiance" [TNG]).
The starship was destroyed near the Zeta Maxia star
system by what was later learned to be a Ferengi
vessel. Years later, the Ferengi Bok returned the
hulk of the Stargazer to Picard as part of a plot to
discredit Picard for what Bok believed to be
Picard's part in his son's death. ("The Battle"
[TNG]). Following the loss of the Stargazer in 2355,
Picard was court-martialed per standard Starfleet
procedure, but cleared of wrong-doing. The prosecutor
in the case was Phillipa Louvois, with whom Picard
had been romantically involved. ("The Measure of a
Man" [TNG]).

The Stargazer was designed by Andrew Probert and Rick
Sternbach. The miniature was built by Greg Jein. A
smaller model of the Stargazer was on display in
Captain Picard's ready room aboard the Enterprise-D.
The dedication plaque on the bridge of the Stargazer
bore the motto, devised by episode writer Herb
Wright, "To bring light into the darkness."

Die Stargazer stand von 2333 bis 2355 unter dem
Kommando von Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Sie unternahmen
eine historische Tiefenraum-Forschungsmission. Danach
übernahm Picard die Enterprise-D. Lieutenant Picard
war Mitglied der Brückenbesatzung als der Captain
getötet wurde und er übernahm dann das Kommando über
die Brücke. Wegen dieser Aktion offerierte man ihm
später das Kommando der Stargazer. ("Das Herz eines
Captains" [TNG]). Während einer Forschungsmission im
Sektor 21503 griffen Cardassianer die Stargazer an
und das Schiff entkam nur mit knapper Not. ("Der
Rachefeldzug" [TNG]). Unter Picards Kommando besuchte
die Stargazer 2354 den Planeten Chalna.
("Versuchskaninchen" [TNG]). Das Raumschiff wurde von
einem Ferengischiff - damals noch unbekannt - nahe
des Zeta Maxia Sternensystems zerstört. Jahre später
wurde die Stargazer von dem Ferengi Bok zurückgegeben.
Er benutzte es als Köder für Picard, um seinen Ruf zu
zerstören. Er war überzeugt, daß Picard Schuld an dem
Tod seines Sohnes hatte. ("Die Schlacht von Maxia"
[TNG]). Nach dem Verlust der Stargazer im Jahre 2355
gab es eine Anhörung (Standardprozedur der
Sternenflotte), die Picard von jeglicher Schuld
freisprach. Die Anklägerin war Philippa Louvois, mit
der Picard ein Verhältnis hatte. ("Wem gehört Data?"
[TNG]).

Die Stargazer wurde von Andrew Probert und Rick
Sternbach entworfen. Das Model wurde von Greg Jein
gebaut. Ein kleineres Model stand in Picards
Bereitschaftsraum auf der Enterprise-D. Die
Indienststellungsplakette auf der Brücke der Stargazer
trug das Motto: "Licht in die Dunkelheit zu bringen."
Die Idee stammte von dem Schreiber von Episoden, Herb
Wright.
