What is it?

A set of icons for you to use.

Icons?
------
Well they are Newicons which use the standard set of 32 colours
so they will not take any spare pens. They are in the Aes style and there
are over 160 icons.

Why?
----
I got tired at the lack of NewIcons available. Phil (Aes) was working hard to
try to create as many as he could, but this still was not enough for me. I
started off drawing Directory Opus icons and it grew into this set.

What?
-----
There is a full set of DOpus icons, many program icons, a whole load of drawer
icons and some reusable ones.


NewIcons is currently at version 4.1 and is a very stable and impressive
package. It can quickly allocate (and remap) icon colours on the fly, so there
are no more palette worries - no horrible colour locking software here!

The main advantage of them is that if you are only running a 16 colour screen
they will be remapped to use the closest colours and so will look their best
at all times.

You can get NewIcons from aminet, util/wb/newicons41.lha
Of course if you have the amazing Directory Opus (MagellanII) they are built
into the windows manager.



One of the advantages of the Amiga is that you don't have to upgrade it as
often as the PC. However this doesn't mean you shouldn't upgrade it at all.

Getting something as simple as more ram will improve your machine. A graphics
card, better processor and a SVGA monitor are almost necessities to have
a good machine. This will bring your computer up to the level of a modern PC
on sale - and will probably keep you at the amiga scene for longer


Amiga Format thought it would be a good idea for them to have my NewIcons first,
so they could release them before they appeared on Aminet. If they were just
chucked on the CD they would be buried in many directories, and this wasn't
wanted. Many AF readers had contacted the mag and asked questions about icons so
Ben Vost had the idea of doing a tutorial. After much thought I decided 3
was the best number, but I was only allowed to do 1 or 6. I couldn't have said
everything I wanted in 1, so I did the full series of 6.

I would fully support Amiga Format (subscribe now!) as CU has (at time of
writing) announced that it will close down. If you support AF the advertisers
will reach more people, will sell more and the Amiga will still be good business
for them. It is horrible to see such a great platform suffer so much, and
hopefully in 1999 we shall see it showing off once more. Maybe they'll have
built NewIcons into the OS ;]


Firstly thanks to Phil (AES) who gave me full support and encouragement as
well as little tips and pointers. You are a great artist & an asset to the
Amiga community! Some of the icons may use bits of Phil's (certainly the
drawer icons do :o) and some were to see if I could do better (imho).

I thought I'd lost all files from my Amiga, but found a backup
recently (2007)! There were files which were meant for Aminet but never
got uploaded, so I'm doing it now. Hello to all you hardened Amiga fans
still using Aminet.

This icon set featured on (I believe) the Amiga Format November 1998 cover
CD, I did a 6 month art/icon tutorial and they were on the last issue.
They should have been uploaded to Aminet a few months later. So, here
it is - 9 years later :o)
